Portraits and Places
National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore
Medium: Oil on canvas
A first solo exhibition of oil paintings. There were about 25 works many of which were painted since her return to Singapore in 1991. They were mainly inspired from people and landscapes in Indonesia. Perhaps to convey a mood of dreamlike quality, the paintings are predominantly in hues of cobaltish blues and emerald greens, evocative of the lush tropical landscapes at dusk or dawn. Of subject-matter, many landscapes contain a path or a road; the path appears to lead out of the picture frame to the viewer, a strategy employed to pull the viewer into the picture itself. The landscapes often hold human figures in the act of walking or harvesting or playing, but despite these actions, there is a pervasive passive quality.
